Today, Jan. 26th, Pirate Fest will kick off at 10am. Then it's the much awaited invasion of Jose Gasparilla Pirate Ship along the Hillsborough Bay!
This is an annual celebration held in Tampa, FL. It celebrates the legend of Jose Gaspar (a mythical spanish pirate). According to legend, Gaspar invaded Tampa in the 18th and early 19th centuries. There are accounts of the capture of 36 ships during his first 12 years as a pirate.
After his death, it was believed that he left a treasure along the Florida Coast but has yet to be discovered. Since this infamous invasion, Tampa has upheld its tradition by celebrating what is known as Gasparilla today. It is referred by many as the Mardi Gras of Tampa celebrated with boats, pirates, parades and of course lots of BEADS!!!
