As a Jewelry Lady and lover of all types of necklaces, I still do need a "how to" guide on what necklaces are appropriate to wear with certain necklines. This cheat sheet is really a helpful tool that you can take just about anywhere when getting ready for either that Blind Date, Casual Sunday or even Big Gala.
The key is that you don't want your neckline and your necklace fighting each other, instead they should be complementing each other. Necklaces come in a series of traditional lengths ranging anywhere from 14 inches to 36 inches.
As pictured above, the basics for each neckline are as follows:
Ballet and V necklines are very similar and look best with a necklace following the neckline. Best look for this type is any necklace that just fills in that space.
Crew necklines can be tricky. Balance out the crew with a bib type necklace, one that sits right at the top of your tee or sweater, to create some drama.
Button down necklines can be worn professionally buttoned all the way up or casually with a couple buttons undone. If you're going professional, then you can wear a longer necklace that fits under the collar and over the shirt or if going casual, wear a short necklace/choker/pendant chain that peek-a-boos under the open collar.
Scoop necklines can be worn with just about anything. Shorter necklaces or longer chains/body necklaces looks good with this one, however, try to avoid those that just hit the neckline.
Boat necklines are not easy to accentuate. Never wear anything shorter than this neckline. Go for a longer (20" min) style. Long chains with pendants work nicely and body necklaces do as well.
Cowl necklines are worn best with a longer length necklace tucked beneath the cowl. It creates a far more elegant and stylish look or a short pendant style necklace.
